About this month’s painting…
This piece took its initial inspiration with my desire to paint the intensity of red within a strong sense of light, really the abstract elements of this painting. In talking to you about this one, I can share with you a little bit of insight as to what goes through my mind as I work. I have certain dry pigments I really love and find them simply beautiful in and of themselves. On the canvas, I try to push what I can achieve with these pigments when I paint on the surface. To go after my initial inspiration here in this one, I used varied paint values, paint textures and richness of paint color. The richness of the red cherries vs the less intense background color. I like the metallic cup vs the smoothness & color in the skin of the cherries. The illumination of the piece from above and outside the picture frame. I also feel the satin black frame w inner gold liner helps to set off the intentions of the painting. In this small work, it’s selecting the where to emphasize the subtleties. In the process of creating, the paintings speak to you as you work into them, and they tell you, in a back and forth conversation, where to go next in their creation. 🙂 Hope you enjoy this work. Thank you, Sean
